2022 CAG report on derailments flagged multiple shortcomings in rail safety
Following the horrific three-way train accident in Odisha’s Balasore, the safety of India’s trains has come to the fore, specifically a 2022 report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) that flagged multiple shortcomings and made recommendations to improve the safety of the country’s transport system.
Titled ‘Derailment in Indian Railways’, the report highlighted shortfalls in inspections, failures to submit or accept inquiry reports after accidents, failures to use a dedicated railway fund on priority tasks, a decline in funding track renewal, and inadequate staffing in safety operations as serious concerns.
