Virtual court: Power regulator starts ‘e-hearing’ of cases
NEW DELHI: With the novel coronavirus pandemic adversely impacting the conduct of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission’s proceedings, the commission plans to start ‘e-hearing’ for cases.
DERC will now hear cases related to consumers, power discoms and other agencies in virtual courtrooms through the Google Meet videoconferencing platform. The regulatory body has allowed parties and advocates or representatives to attend the hearing from their respective offices or homes. They have also been advised to familiarise themselves with the Google Meet platform, so that they are well-prepared.
Although the hearing will be conducted through videoconferencing, DERC has strictly instructed that decorum has to be maintained. Advocates appearing and presenting their cases have to observe the dress code and etiquette prescribed under the Advocates Act, 1961, and both party representatives and the lawyers have been instructed to be seated appropriately in ambient surroundings ensuring that there is no background noise or disturbance, such as ringing of mobile phones, background chatter, etc.
