Traffic restored on Srinagar-Leh highway after 5 days

Sonamarag: The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway reopened for traffic on Wednesday after remaining suspended for five days following the season’s first snowfall on Saturday.

An official told Greater Kashmir that after improvement in weather, Project Vijayak and Beacon of the Border roads organisation pressed its men and machinery into service to clear the road of the 2-3 ft of snow which had accumulated at Zojila and Meenamarg areas of Drass along the highway.

He said that a one-way traffic from Kargil to Srinagar was allowed to clear the stranded vehicles including passenger vehicles and trucks. The official said that the priority will be to clear all the stranded vehicles on either side before allowing any fresh traffic movement on the highway.
