A temple and a mazaar (Muslim shrine) were removed amid heavy police deployment in northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura Chowk Sunday morning to pave the way for the construction of a flyover, police said.
“The decision to remove both the structures (temple and mazar) from Bhajanpura Chowk was taken during a meeting of Delhi Religious Committee because the road has to be widened as construction of Saharanpur Highway is underway. Everything was done peacefully”, Dr. Joy N Tirkey, North East DCP said on the issue.
Sharat Kumar, Seelampur SDM, added “The decision (to remove the mazar and temple) was approved by the Religious Committee and following the orders of Lieutenant Governor (of Delhi) this demolition drive was carried out. It was done peacefully and there was no problem.”
