Tamil Nadu lacks political commitments for clean energy transition

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu boasts of the highest installed capacity of renewable energy sources but performs poorly with regard to transition to clean and green energy, says a study by Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. Karnataka, it says, is the only one that scored well across all dimensions of clean electricity transition, followed by Gujarat.

Sixteen states, whose combined electricity demand constituted about 90% of the country’s annual power requirement, were evaluated, rated on decarbonisation, performance of power system, readiness of power ecosystem, and policies and political commitments.

While TN’s performance ranged from average to well in the first three parameters, policies and political commitments is where it was poor.
