Suspension of mining operation in Coal India Ltd’s Margherita is temporary
Guwahati: Officials in North Eastern coalfields (NEC) said that suspension of mining operation in the Coal India Limited’s (CIL) Margherita is temporary. The Assam based coal producing unit of CIL in order stated, “As per approval of competent authority all mining operations of NEC are hereby temporarily suspended, June 3, 2020.” The order stated that however liquidation of present coal stocks will continue till existing coal stocks is exhausted. “All necessary statutory formalities in this regard to be taken up with concerned statutory bodies.”
Recently the Division Bench of Gauhati High Court accepted the Public Interest Litigations (PILs) filed in connection with coal mining in the Dehing Patkai forest in Assam and gave the next date of hearing for the same in July. Gauhati High Court on Thursday last issued notices to the Centre, state, Coal India and other stakeholders after taking up a suo motu case against coal mining in the Dehing Patkai forest.
