Stitch in time avoids power shortage as peak demand hits 240GW
NEW DELHI: Power demand scaled a fresh peak at nearly 240GW (gigawatts) on September 1 at 12.22pm due to a combination of expanding economic activities and humid weather across large parts of the country created in the wake of a receding monsoon.
The new peak marked an increase of 2.5% from the previous high of 234 GW recorded on August 17, surpassing the government’s estimate of 229GW maximum demand for this summer.
Peak demand denotes the maximum electricity consumption over a specified time period, usually in 15-minute slabs. Energy met is the units of power supplied in 24 hours.
