Spirit Airlines layoffs in motion: US airline operator to furlough 365 pilots; move to cut $100 million in pilot costs

Spirit Airlines announced on Thursday its decision to furlough 365 pilots and downgrade the status of up to 170 pilots in the first quarter of 2026, as part of a broader workforce reduction strategy amid ongoing restructuring efforts.

The ultra-low-cost carrier, which filed for bankruptcy for the second time in a year this past August, informed the pilots’ union of its intention to cut $100 million in annual pilot-related expenses to preserve cash reserves, reported Reuters. “In line with our ongoing restructuring, we are implementing further measures to align staffing levels with our previously announced capacity reductions and a smaller operating fleet,” Spirit Airlines stated.
