Southern Railway sees 88% surge in passenger numbers

Chennai: The number of train passengers in Southern Railway increased by 88.5% in 2022-23 compared to the previous year, with around 640 million passengers travelling, up from 339.6 million in 2021-2022.

This surge in passenger traffic generated earnings of ₹6,345 crore, the highest ever for the zone. In comparison, the passenger revenue from the previous year was ₹3,539.77 crore. The earnings also surpassed the pre-Covid year od 2019-20, when the revenue stood at ₹5,225 crore.

Being a passenger-friendly zone, Southern Railway has been taking efforts to handle the ever-increasing traffic volumes by operating reserved and unreserved trains, as well as special trains during peak seasons and festivals.
