Skills that the electric vehicle business in India needs
Electric vehicles (EVs) will be huge in India, and the country needs more engineers who have a cross sectional knowledge in the fields of electrical, electronics and mechanical engineering to build a robust EV industry.
EV makers are looking to hire not from the traditional automakers but from the fields of software, consumer electronics and even from the aerospace industry, where connectivity plays the most important role.
Since EVs are all about connectivity, the field of mechatronics has assumed importance. It is a multidisciplinary branch of engineering that focuses on the engineering of both electrical and mechanical systems and includes a combination of robotics, electronics, computer, telecommunications, systems, control, and product engineering.
“This is a subject that was started in US universities about three decades ago, but there is nothing of this sort in India,” says Chetan Maini, co-founder of Sun Mobility, an EV ecosystem player.
