Rural areas, small towns bear brunt of coal shortage

With a sharp rise in demand for power due to heatwave conditions across the state, the UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) is buying power from Power Exchange India Ltd (PXIL) at the rate of Rs 8 per unit.

The UPPCL is Trading and Self-Clearing Member (TSCM) of Power Exchange India Ltd (PXIL) and Proprietary Member of Indian Energy Exchange Ltd (IEX) since 2013. This has enabled the UPPCL to trade energy on a daily bidding basis directly from power exchanges to ensure better power availability in UP.

All-India Power Engineers’ Federation chairman Shailendra Dubey said that the UPPCL was imposing power cuts in rural areas and small towns as the gap between the demand and supply remained at 4,000 MW.
