Railways’ new device checks real-time seat availability, allots 7K unconfirmed passengers berths daily

The Railways’ new hand-held terminals (HHTs), meant for computerised on-board ticket checking and allotment of vacant berths, facilitated an average of nearly 7,000 unconfirmed ticket-holders get confirmed seats on trains daily in the last four months, data shows. The HHTs, which come in the size if an iPad, have passenger reservation charts for trains already loaded in them. Instead of going through paper charts like before, ticket checking staff can just browse through these devices for real-time updates on bookings as these are connected to the passenger reservation system central server.
