Pvt power discoms plan battery storage as backup for city grid

Mumbai: The city might soon have a power back-up for its transmission grid in the event of disruption resulting in outages. Tata Power has proposed a battery storage facility of upto 500MW for Mumbai to cater to essential services such as railways, refineries, big hospitals, during a major outage such as the one faced in October 2020, company’s president (T&D) Sanjay Banga said on Thursday.
Sources said Adani Electricity has also proposed a similar battery storage system for upto 500MW for the city.
The city had faced blackouts due to cascading faults in transmission lines bringing power to Mumbai, on October 12, 2020, and on February 27, April 26 and May 5 this year.
