Production of fuel more than sufficient to take care of any demand surge, govt clarifies

Quelling rumours of a shortage, the government on Wednesday clarified that the production of petrol and diesel in India is more than sufficient to take care of any demand surge.

The clarification follows reports of fuel shortages across various states in the country, including Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Some areas have reported a big increase in instances of rush at the PSU retail outlets which have led to delays and increased waiting time for customers. This has, in turn, led to speculation of supply constraints by the public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).
