Power ministry fumes as SERCs don’t toe its green line

NEW DELHI: The power ministry has come down hard on state tariff regulators for not playing by the Centre’s rules to encourage renewable energy supply, either setting high tariffs or laying down norms that are out of line with the Electricity Act provisions.

“It may be noted that rules framed under the (Electricity) Act have the force of law and any violation of the law is liable for action under the provisions of the law,” the ministry last week said in a letter to state regulatory commissions (SERCs), indirectly hinting at repercussions for failure to fall in line.

The ministry asked the regulators to immediately take corrective action, including framing of green power tariff norms in states where these are yet to be notified, and report compliance.
