Power meter or time bomb? Inflated electricity bills leave Chennai residents in tears
Inflated bills and erratic ‘meter reading’ by Tangedco have been sending shock waves among domestic electricity consumers across the city. While a Madipakkam resident was slapped a bimonthly power bill of ₹7,210, as against his usual amount of ₹300, a Gowrivakkam man was made to pay ₹27,000.
Officials blame these ridiculously excessive billing on staff shortage and say the soon-to-be-installed smart meters will solve the problems related to meter reading and billing. But till the last meter turns ’smart’ these largescale discrepancies will continue to shock consumers.
