Power Grid stir in South 24 Pgs called off

Bhangar: Villagers who had laid siege to the Power Grid project site in South 24 Parganas on Tuesday over pending land compensation called off their agitation on Wednesday following a meeting at the DM’s office in the presence of state urban development minister Firhad Hakim.
The protesters were staging their dharna under the banner of Jami Jibika Bastutantra O Poribesh Raksha Committee, which had hit headlines in 2017 when farmers had launched a prolonged land stir. Villagers resumed the agitation on Tuesday by locking the main Power Grid entrance.
“Farmers who gave land for the project are yet to receive the remaining 10% of the promised compensation,” said committee leader Alik Chakraborty. The committee wants the government to clean up Bidyadhari river in the interest of farmers.
