Plastic seized from Mumbaikars to be used for road building

More than 85,000 kilogramme of plastic bags, bottles and containers that were seized from Mumbaiites over the past year will be shredded and used for road building from Saturday onwards, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

The decision to make use of plastic products compulsory for road building was taken after civic officials said godowns were overflowing with these items that were seized from small shopkeepers and vendors.

The plastic items will now be shipped to a contractor in Pune who will shred them into chips that would then be fed into asphalt plants, which make bitumen for roads.
