Piped gas supply to boost urea output in Bengal, says Pradhan

Durgapur: Petroleum and natural gas minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday said with the implementation of Urja Ganga pipeline that would reach near Kolkata via various districts in the state on its way to its final destination in Haldia by 2022, Matix Fertilisers and Chemicals will get shot in the arm putting an end to “paucity of urea” in the state.
According to the minister, the farmers in the state need about 1.5 million tonne of urea each year and the revival of the first urea plant in the state which can produce 1.3 MT urea will meet their long-standing demand. “The Matix plant cannot produce urea due to lack of feedstock (gas). The Prime Minister will dedicate the GAIL gas pipeline on February 7 which will connect this urea plant will help mitigate the urea crisis in the state,” Pradhan said.
The minister was talking at the programme in Durgaprur two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state during which the PM will launch four projects worth Rs 4,700 crore.
