Petrol, diesel price: As crude oil rates halved, fuel rates fell only by ₹6 this year

NEW DELHI : Petrol and diesel prices were left unchanged once again today. State-run fuel retailers have not touched rates for 22 consecutive days since March 16. Petrol, diesel prices have, however, increased in the meantime in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata due to a hike in VAT imposed by state governments.

Barring those cities, petrol and diesel prices have so far fallen by only about ₹6 a litre each while the rates of crude oil are half of their 2020 peaks.

The clamour for rate cuts is growing louder now as the Opposition Congress claimed that the government has pocketed a profit of ₹20 lakh crore during the past six years from softening crude oil rates.
