NY flight returns to Mumbai 2 hrs after takeoff due to glitch

Mumbai: A Mumbai-New York Air India flight had an air turnback on Tuesday after the Boeing 777 aircraft developed a technical problem over two hours after being airborne.

An air turnback involves an unplanned return to the origin airport. It is a reportable incident.

Flight AI-1119 departed Mumbai around 2.20am and the pilots of the 14-year-old Boeing 777 aircraft (VT-AEI) decided to divert to Mumbai about two-and-a-half hours later when it was over the Iranian airspace.
