Murray Energy Corporation, America’s largest private miner, files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

KOLKATA: Murray Energy Corporation (MEC), America’s largest underground coal mining company along with 97 outfits have filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the United States bankruptcy Code in the US Bankruptcy Court.

Based in St. Clairsville, Ohio in the US, Murray Energy Corporation and its subsidiaries employ nearly 7,000 employees and currently operate 17 active coal mines, consisting of 12 underground longwall mining systems and 42 continuous mining units in Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, Utah, and West Virginia. It also operates two surface mines in Colombia, South America.
