Ministries of road, rail lead in capex spend

NEW DELHI: The government’s capex plan in the transport sector – the key driver of the public expenditure push – has seen Indian railways and the roads ministry rush ahead with the spending.

Data accessed by TOI showed that during April and May, the two ministries, which have pocketed almost 50% of the Centre’s overall capital investment planned during the financial year, have spent 23% of the money allocated to them. They have undertaken expenditure of more than Rs 1,14,000 crore against an allocation of just under Rs 5 lakh crore for 2022-23.

The railways has incurred capital expenditure of over Rs 55,000 crore during the first two months against the full year target of Rs 2.4 lakh crore.
