LPG or electric: Auto owners weigh options

Kolkata: Autos in the city are stage carriages like buses, unlike the metered contract carriage service in other cities.

“There are great advantages of the autorickshaw being a stage carriage. As it is a shared mode of transport, the fare is low and it can disperse a much larger number of people than a personalised contract carriage. But it has never been recognised and formalised in the Motor Vehicles Act,” said a transport department officer.

Auto operators would have complete freedom to choose which type of auto they want as a replacement.
