India’s power grid struggles to absorb soaring solar supply
India’s power grid is struggling to absorb a rapid surge in solar installations, leading to increased curtailment that threatens the pace of renewable expansion and underscores the urgent need for large-scale energy storage.
The curtailment rate for solar generation in October rose to about 12%, the highest since May when Grid Controller of India Ltd. began publishing such data. On some days, as much as 40% of solar power output was denied access to the national grid. Curtailment measures the share of electricity generated but not delivered to consumers.
