‘India to meet 100-GW solar power target by 2022′

India is on course to achieve the ambitious generation target of 100 GW of solar power by 2022, Managing Director, Solar Power Corporation of India (SPCI), Jatindranath Swain said on Saturday.

“When Prime Minister Narendra Modi inquired as to whether India can generate 100 GW of solar energy in 2015, it had most people rubbing their eyes in disbelief. At that time, the country had a meager 2.8 GW of installed solar capacity,” Swain said while speaking at a national symposium of ‘Energy Challenges and Promises’ held at the SOA University here.

Not only was the solar generation then too little, but the tariff was in excess of Rs 8 per unit of electricity, he said, adding the question which was being asked at that time was “even if the target is achieved, who will buy power at such high cost?”
