India Power hopes to supply power in West Bengal’s East Midnapore

India Power, which has been eyeing retail power distribution licences at several locations has received commitment from the West Bengal government that its application would be considered positively.

India Power intends to enter into retail power distribution at industrial hubs in West Bengal’s East Midnapore and had applied for the same with the State Electricity Regulatory Commission several months ago.

It has recently moved Appellate Tribunal and the application for West Midnapore has been up for public hearing a number of times although a final decision was yet to be taken.

On Monday, Mamata Bandyopadhyay, chief minister of West Bengal, inaugurated India Power’s first 150 mw thermal power units of a power station that is scheduled to have a total 450 MW (3×150 MW) generating capacity by end of the fiscal.

“The plant has been commissioned with the state government’s active support in bringing private investment in the power sector and will help in addressing the ever increasing industrial and domestic power need in the state. India Power has invested Rs 3,500 crore in this project, which is one of the largest investments in the state in recent years,” the company said in a statement.

The plant will provide direct and indirect employment to around 5,000 people and will support the State Government’s commitment towards sustained job creation for people of West Bengal.

India Power distributes power to industries and domestic consumers in Asansol, Raniganj and Burdwan Paschim and now hopes to supply power in East Medinipur soon.
