India has become power surplus, net exporter in 9 years: R K Singh

NEW DELHI: India has become a power surplus country and a net exporter of electricity as a result of reforms initiated by the Narendra Modi-led government in the last nine years, power minister R K Singh said on Thursday.

Listing out the government’s achievements in the power sector, the minister said the measures have also been taken to promote renewable energy during this period, which has resulted in non-fossil energy sources accounting for 43% at present.

Singh said the average supply in rural areas has increased from 12.5 hours in 2014 to 20.5 hours at present, while it stands at 23.7 hours for urban areas.

The energy shortage, he said, has come down from 4.2% in 2014 to around 0.2%.
