Hurdle for E-W Metro as traffic cops refuse complete closure of Nirmal Chunder Street

Kolkata: There is a fresh setback for East-West Metro’s full 16km run as the traffic department has had a rethink and is withholding permission for blocking the entire width of Nirmal Chunder Street for ground freezing work.

Traffic officials said that closing Nirmal Chunder Street completely would pose a huge challenge during Durga Puja. “The area has some of the biggest pandals. It’s also the key north-south connector,” said the officials of Sealdah and South traffic guards.

Implementing agency Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) had earlier convinced the cops that without this crucial work, East-West Metro’s 2.5km Sealdah-Esplanade section would remain incomplete.
