Gunfire at Kabul airport kills Afghan soldier, 3 others injured
KABUL: A firefight just outside Kabul’s international airport killed at least one Afghan soldier early on Monday, German officials said, the latest chaos to engulf Western efforts to evacuate those fleeing the Taliban takeover of the country. The US military too confirmed gunfire outside the airport.
“The incident appeared to begin when an unknown hostile actor fired upon Afghan security forces involved in monitoring access to the gate. The Afghans returned fire, and in keeping with their right of self-defence, so too did US and coalition troops,” the statement said.
Gunfire broke out near an entrance to the airport, where at least seven Afghans died a day earlier in a stampede of thousands of people.
