Grounded SpiceJet aircraft’s engine catches fire at Delhi airport

India’s aviation regulator has removed SpiceJet from its so-called enhanced surveillance, saying the no-frills airline had taken “suitable maintenance action”.

However, on the same day, the engine of an under-maintenance SpiceJet Q400 aircraft caught fire. SpiceJet said the aircraft and the maintenance personnel were safe.

“On July 25, SpiceJet Q400 aircraft under maintenance, while carrying out engine ground run at idle power at bay, the AME observed fire warning on number one engine. The aircraft fire extinguisher bottle was discharged. As a precaution, the fire brigade was called,” a SpiceJet spokesperson said.
