Government’s Basic Customs Duty may push solar gear makers to shut SEZ units

New Delhi: Solar equipment manufacturers who have units in special economic zones (SEZs) fear they may have to shut shop if the government sticks to its proposal to levy a basic customs duty (BCD) on the value addition done at these plants.

Industry executives said that in their recent interactions with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the government took note of the concern but did not take any action subsequently.
