Government moots routing all power purchase via exchanges

The government has mooted a centralised system to route electricity consumption in all states through power exchanges to discover a national uniform price and ensure that cheapest available power is dispatched, a move expected to lead to large savings in procurement costs.

The Union power ministry has issued a fresh draft proposal on ‘market-based economic dispatch’ (MBED) with claims of 4% savings in entire power procurement cost.
