GAIL targets net zero status by 2040

NEW DELHI: State-run gas utility GAIL on Friday announced a target of achieving net zero emission from operations by 2040 by foraying into green hydrogen, renewables and biofuels but did not disclose proposed investments to achieve the goal.
“In line with India’s vision to achieve net zero by 2070, GAIL has completed a comprehensive study on science-based net zero ambition and intends to achieve 100% reduction in Scope-1 and Scope-2 emissions and a 35% reduction in scope-3 emissions by 2040,” Jain said at the company’s annual meeting of shareholders.
GAIL’s core business is clean-burning natural gas, which gives it a smaller carbon footprint compared to oil refining or producing companies, even though it also operates a petrochemical plant.
