Fuel shortage, vegetable price rise feared

The ongoing strike by drivers of commercial vehicles has led to apprehensions of fuel shortage and rise in prices of vegetables and other essential commodities.

The drivers are stopping the tankers carrying petrol and diesel and also the vehicles carrying vegetables and fish on the National Highways.

Utkal Petroleum Dealers’ Association general secretary Sanjay Lath said fuel is transported to over 1, 600 fuel stations in the State from depots in Paradip, Baleswar, Jharsuguda and Jatni by 2,000 tankers. As these vehicles are being detained by the agitators, fuel stations are unable to replenish their stocks.
