Fine for breaches in aircraft safety may be hiked tenfold

NEW DELHI : The Centre on Wednesday decided to amend an eight-decades-old law to raise the maximum fine by tenfold for breaches in aircraft safety. The move comes amid several instances of technical snags reported by airlines.

The Aircraft (Amendment) Bill, 2019, raises the maximum limit of fine from the existing ₹10 lakh to ₹1 crore, and extends the law to all areas of air navigation, according to an official statement.

The amendments will also enable regulatory bodies, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, to become more effective, it added.
