Eye on UP polls, PM Modi to launch Ujjwala next week
NEW DELHI: Prime minister Narendra Modi is likely to launch on August 10 the second edition of ‘Ujjwala’, his government’s marquee social welfare programme for giving poor households access to clean cooking fuel, months ahead of the crucial UP assembly polls.
Modi had launched the scheme in May 2016 from Balia district of UP, a move that helped fuel the BJP’s rise to power in the state next year and expanded the party’s appeal among the economically weaker sections of society across the country.
Ujjwala has been designed to improve the lives of womenfolk in poor households by providing LPG connection free of cost. The scheme helped expand LPG coverage in the country to 91% and provided a gateway to deliver relief to the poor in the aftermath of last year’s lockdown.
