NEW DELHI: Coal supplies in major plants across the country are at critically low levels. This means that the country may face power shortages in the coming months.
On an average, most power stations had only 3-4 day’s of coal. This is way lower than the government guidelines which recommends supplies of at least 2 weeks.
Coal accounts for over 70 per cent of India’s electricity output, and around three-quarters of the fossil fuel is mined domestically.
What led to the decline in inventories?
Of the total power stations, 17 of them had nil amount of stock, while 21 of them had stock for 1 day, 16 had 2 days coal, and 18 of them had 3 days coal stock left, according to Central Electricity Authority (CEA) data.
