Electricity Amendment Bill a progressive proposal
The proceedings over the recently-introduced Electricity Amendment Bill 2022 in the Lok Sabha were not quite smooth. It is widely considered by the States to be an encroachment by the Centre into their power sector governance. The major opposition to the Bill is because it is proposed to give additional distribution licences in an area already serviced by a distribution company (discom). The Bill is now referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy.
Actually, many of the fears of the States are exaggerated as the proposal doesn’t intend to encroach into the domain of power sector governance vested in the States.
