Bengaluru boasts a commendable adoption rate of Electric Vehicles (EVs); however, the ubiquitous auto-rickshaws seem to have been left behind in this race.
Out of the lakhs of auto-rickshaws that traverse the city roads, only a meagre number of them are e-autos, and a handful have been retrofitted to run on electric power.
C Sampath, general secretary, Adarsh Auto Drivers’ Union, estimates that a mere 1% of the auto-rickshaws are electric. “There are close to 1.5 lakh autos in the city and maybe 1,500 to 2,000 of them are e-autos,” he said.
