In a move that would further impact the bottom line of already struggling airlines, market leader IndiGo has launched a Diwali special sale across its network of 64 destinations.
“Effective October 24, 2018 till October 26, 2018, IndiGo is offering customers all-inclusive fares starting from INR 899. The low-cost carrier is offering 10 lakh seats and this sale is valid for travel between November 8, 2018 and April 15, 2019,” said a release from the airline that flies over 40% air passengers in India.
“We are delighted to announce this three day festive sale across our network between October 24 to October 26. Diwali is one of the most aupiscious occasions to meet families and friends and through this festive sale we aspire to create more flexibility of choice for ours customers to fly at low fares. We are sure that customers will quickly grab the seats we have available, starting at fares as low as Rs 899,” William Boulter, Chief Commercial Officer, IndiGo was quoted in the press statement.
A sale by IndiGo during a peak travel season of the year is bound to be matched by other carriers.
Competing airlines, however, complain that this is a clear cut sign of predatory behaviour. “A sale during the month of Diwali will clearly impact the bottom line of the industry,” said an executive of an airline, who did not want to be identified.
Due to rising cost of operations and declining yields, airlines in India are reporting decline in profitability numbers.
