Dabhol power generation to be scaled up to 500 MW by January
The Ratnagiri Gas & Power Pvt Ltd (RGPPL), which currently supplies 290 MW of power from the Dabhol project to the Indian Railways, will increase generation to 500 MW by end of January.
“The company will ramp up the generation to 500 MW by end of January as the Indian Railways propose to increase its offtake,” an RGPPL official told Business Standard. “After CERC (Central Electricity Regulatory Commission) gives its approval, the scheduling of power will be made by the state and regional load dispatch centres so that power evacuation will be possible.”
The Railways has started the process to seek approval from the CERC.
RGPPL restarted power generation at its Dabhol plant on November 26; the project had been shut for almost two years since December 2013. The restoration of power followed RGPPL receiving gas from the reverse bidding process undertaken by the Centre. The company subsequently entered into a power purchase agreement with Indian Railways.
The company currently supplies 290 MW to Railways at a tariff of less than Rs 5. According to Indian Railways, power from Dabhol project will lead to annual savings of Rs 1,000 crore.
The Dabhol project has a total installed capacity of 1,967 MW. RGPPL, promoted by NTPC Limited and GAIL (India) Limited, was set up to take over and revive the assets of Dabhol Power Company.
The RGPPL official, however, added that the company is yet to receive any new offer from other buyers.
