Coal-fired plants get emission deadline breather

NEW DELHI: The Union environment ministry has extended the deadline up to three years for coal-fired power plants to follow new emission standards and allowed defaulters to continue their operations after paying penalty if they miss the new timeline.
As it will be the third deadline since notification of new emission norms for such plants, the move drew criticism from environmentalists who say it will have grave repercussions for fight against air pollution. Thermal power plants will have multiple deadlines with maximum three years being given to those in comparatively lesser polluting areas. TNN
