Effective from Nov 1, 2018, the Indian Railways has hiked the freight charges for transporting coal. Since Jun 2014, it has hiked the fares five times and the overall hike is in the range of 11.69 per cent (for distance upto 100 km) and 59.66 per cent (for distance from 101 to 500 km). For distance of 1,000 km, the charges are as high as Rs 1,892 per tonne.
