Budget 2023: Centre announces plans for new biogas plants, set to introduce CBG sale mandate
The market for compressed biogas (CBG) will expand in the country with the budget unveiling plans for new plants as well as the intent to mandate natural gas marketers to sell biogas.
“In due course, a 5 percent CBG mandate will be introduced for all organizations marketing natural and biogas,” finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her budget speech. India imports about half the natural gas it consumes and is aiming to replace some of the imports with domestic biogas. Policy measures in recent years have helped energize the sector, with 31 CBG plants currently operating and about 100 retail outlets selling biogas.
