Asked to vacate ‘residence’ under flyovers, homeless say makeover of city cosmetic

NEW DELHI: Sitting underneath Chirag Dilli flyover, Dhanraj (57) is busy cooking in a pot and preparing his next meal. Flyovers, he said, have been his home for many decades now.

“We were earlier staying below IIT Gate flyover, then moved here. Our children go to schools nearby,” he said. Police, claimed Dhanraj, told him recently that “bade videshi log (important foreign visitors)” would arrive in the city soon and till they are here, his family would need to vacate the area.

“In the past 10 years, not once have we been asked by any official to vacate but now, suddenly, we are being told to leave for some time,” he said.
