All flights stopped, Kolkata airport undergoes thorough clean-up; passengers seek refund
KOLKATA: The city airport operator undertook a large-scale disinfection and sanitization drive at the entire airport from Wednesday, hours after the last flight from Bengaluru landed around 11.50pm on Tuesday and the airport was shut for an indefinite period. Although the digital display board outside the airport still showed that it would be shut down till March 31 — according to the the earlier order —but following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision of complete lockdown in the country till April 14, a senior official of the airport said the shutdown may be extended.
“It’s a rare occasion when all operations in the entire airport remain closed and, considering the current scenario, we have undertaken large-scale disinfection, clean up and sanitization of the entire airport — both air-side, city-side and inside the terminal. We have deployed around 50 people and have asked them to maintain necessary hygiene and social distancing protocol while doing their work,” said airport director Kaushik Bhattacharjee.
