50kmph limit on e-way will defeat its purpose: NHAI

NEW DELHI: It’s not just commuters who find it difficult to drive at 50 kmph speed on the completed portion of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, which is designed for speeds of up to 120 kmph. Even NHAI says the purpose of such a “barricaded” highway will fail, if the speed is kept so low.
“We are writing to Delhi Traffic Police seeking giving a detailed features of this road, which segregates the straight-going traffic and local commuters. Since they have the authority to notify the speed limit in areas under their jurisdiction, we will request them to adequately revise the maximum speed,” said an NHAI official. He added that the completed portion is the first such stretch in an urban area.
Once completed, no two-three wheeler or any slow moving traffic will be allowed in this barricaded portion. “You can’t compare this stretch even with Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, which has several entry and exit points, and there is mixed traffic.
