20 die as 2k-ton eway bridge girder, launcher crash 115 ft

KALYAN: Twenty people, including four engineers, died and three were injured after a launcher and girder, totally weighing 1,950 tons, collapsed from a height of 115 feet during construction of a bridge on Samruddhi Expressway near Sarlambe village in Thane’s Shahapur, around 80km from Mumbai, late Monday night.

The launcher, 100 metres long, was being used to instal precast girders for a 2.2km-long bridge-the tallest and longest on Samruddhi Expressway. Twenty-eight personnel-four engineers, seven staff workers and 17 labourers-were at the site when the accident happened. Police said some were stuck under the concrete girder debris and others under the launcher.
