2-day power strike from today, Maharashtra govt invokes MESMA

MUMBAI: The state government on Sunday evening invoked stringent sections of MESMA (Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act) as unions representing over 80,000 workers of power companies, MSEDCL, MAHAGENCO and MAHATRANSCO, threatened to go on two day strike.

If the strike happens, it could cripple the power generation, transmission and distribution system across state. The strike is part of several public sector unions, including those representing banks, protesting against privatisation across the country.

The state government issued an official gazette imposing MESMA and state power minister Nitin Raut warned employees from participating in the strike.

“There are Class 10 and 12 exams going on, besides the unbearable summer heat during which electricity consumption is high. Moreover, we have crops which need power for irrigation.
